The Ministry of Youth Development & Sports held a press briefing on the upcoming National Sports Awards earlier today.
Acting Director of Sports and Chairman of the Awards Committee, Mr. Patrick Mathurin, revealed that after much deliberation by a panel of 5 esteemed judges, the night’s winners have been chosen and the envelopes have been sealed for the prestigious occasion. Mathurin then went on to clarify the committee’s approach on the overall Sports Personality of the year award.
He also disclosed that a meeting was held between the Director of Sport, the St. Lucia Amateur Swimming Association (SLASA), and himself on the miscommunication over the criteria for nominees last Thursday.
When asked about the quality and fairness of submissions presented by the various member federations, Mrs Liota Charlmagne-Mason, the newly appointed Acting Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Youth Development & Sports, explained that the department continues to battle with this issue.
She also disclosed that the ministry may intervene in instances where there are personal tiffs between individual athletes and their respective associations, however she says the ministry must be approached officially.
Due to space limitations, the ceremony is an invitation only event, however it will be broadcast live on NTN and streamed online. The annual National Sports Awards will be held at the Royalton Hotel from 7pm on Saturday February 17th 2018.
