St Jude Hospital responds to Raise Your Voice misleading statements

[Press Release] St Jude Hospital notes the misleading statements made about the hospital by Raise Your Voice St Lucia Inc. in a Press Release issued on March 19, 2018.

Contrary to the organization’s claims, St Jude Hospital currently has a full-time Consultant Obstetrician/Gynecologist (OB/GYN) on staff. A second Obstetrician/Gynecologist has been hired to replace one who resigned in December. That physician is due to take up employment soon. An OB/GYN from the community has been providing coverage whenever the existing OB/GYN requires time off.

At no time, was St Jude Hospital without an Obstetrician/Gynecologist.

The claim that “women already in the advanced stages of labour are referred to Victoria Hospital without proper arrangement for their safe transfer which has resulted in infant mortality and major health complications for both mother and child,” is unfounded. Patients in advanced stages of labour are not transferred because of the inherent risk of doing so.

St Jude Hospital follows Standard Operating Procedure in the transfer of patients to Victoria Hospital. All patients are transferred via ambulance provided either by Hospital or the St Lucia Fire Service. During the transfer, patients are always accompanied by either a nurse, a doctor, an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or a combination of three, depending on the severity of the case.

Cases are always discussed with the Consultant at Victoria Hospital prior to the transfer of any patient.

St Jude Hospital observes standard operating procedures in the delivery of healthcare and continues to provide optimum care to the public despite operating in less than ideal conditions.

Return to the old army hospital that the nuns used to run should have been completed by now. We need some investigation of this problem, including an independent forensic audit. Persons involved should be held responsible. Politics of the hospittal staff have undoubtedly weakened the staff, especially damaging to the OB-GYN service and other speclities, while giving seemingly small power advantage to others. Recent familial alignment between chief of staff and national police force has also caused patient harm and further political alignment.. Nepotism has further severly damaged the professionalism and medical quality of the staff. Some decisions have been shameful, petty and self centered.
Unfortunately these shortcomings have caused problems of patient care, at least in several cases resulthing in death. Since the exodus of the nuns, the hospital has fallen into political corruption that seems to support the staff deterioration God knows how this can be corrected at this time.
    sincerely, Thomas A. Lucas, M.D.
