SERENA WILLIAMS FINED $17,000 ON 3 OFFENCES FROM US OPEN FINAL

Naomi Osaka, who is of Japanese and Haitian decent, won her very first Grand Slam title against her idol Serena Williams at the US Open on Saturday.

The game ended 6-2 6-4, but not before Williams had her go at umpire Carlos Ramos, who accused her of on court coaching. She was subsequently given a penalty for speaking up against him. She accused him of sexism, demanded an apology, and also smashed her racket.

Many praised Serena for speaking up, while others have said her attitude showed no sportsmanship.

One day after the match, Williams was fined $10,000 for “verbal abuse of chair umpire” Carlos Ramos, $4,000 for being warned for coaching, and $3,000 for breaking her racket.

The money comes out of her prize money of $1.85 million as the runner-up to Osaka.
