Senior Gov’t officials take in NAP exercise

[Press Release]  On April 17, 2018, six (6) Ministers and thirteen (13) Permanent Secretaries and Deputy Permanent Secretaries were among an esteemed grouping of senior Government officials totaling seventy-five (75), who demonstrated solidarity for climate action, through their participation in a special session commemorating the launch of Saint Lucia’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP).

“The Government of Saint Lucia is committed to climate action,” says Honourable Dr. Gale T. C. Rigobert, Minister for Sustainable Development. “It is no secret that climate change has no barriers. Every sector, community, business, household and individual can be affected by its onslaught. As such, my colleague Ministers and I are all working towards leaving no sector behind.”

Later in the day, also on April 17, 2018, forty-seven (47) persons participated in a special session for artists and performers, preceded on the previous day, April 16, by sixty (60) persons who participated in training in the development of Sectoral Adaptation Strategies and Action Plans (SASAPs).

The overarching NAP covers economic sectors and areas that are expected to be impacted by climate change, including water; agriculture and fisheries; infrastructure and spatial planning; natural resource management, including coastal, marine, terrestrial biodiversity; education; and health. In addition, it is the intention to incrementally develop – based on available funding – SASAPs in all of these sectors/areas. To date, SASAPs have been developed in Tourism, Water, Agriculture and Fisheries, along with a number of other products. Minister Rigobert pledged the support of the Cabinet of Ministers in approving Saint Lucia’s NAP, SASAPs and other products within the coming weeks.

The NAP has been developed under the leadership of the Department of Sustainable Development of the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development. A small contingent from Saint Lucia, led by Honourable Dr. Gale T.C. Rigobert presented the NAP and SASAPs to donors at a NAP Donor Symposium held in Barbados on April 19, 2018. The team is currently collating the outcomes of the Donor Symposium that will facilitate urgent follow-up by key agencies.

Saint Lucia’s NAP process has been supported by the Japan-Caribbean Climate Change Partnership of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP’s-JCCCP) and the U.S. In-Country NAP Support Programme, implemented by the International Institute for Sustainable Development IISD).
