PM PUSHES FOR CARICOM OPEN SKIES AGREEMENT

Prime Minister Allen Chastanet is pushing ahead with plans to have Saint Lucia sign onto a CARICOM open skies agreement.

The government leader who is back from a major meeting of heads of government in Haiti this week cites taxes as one of the factors impeding intra-regional air travel.

The Prime Minister proposes further reforms to regional civil aviation, which entails streamlining the regulatory agencies.

Back in 2015, the General Secretary of the Caribbean Tourism Organization urged regional territories to adopt an open skies policy to allow regional carriers unlimited flights to CARICOM member states.

Huge Riley argued that such a move would encourage competition and encourage greater demand for intra-regional travel.
