NWU wants Work Permit Committee reinstated

[Press Release] The National Workers Union (NWU) will soon be dispatching a letter to Hon. Stephenson King, Minister for Labour in which the NWU will be requesting the reinstatement of the disbanded Work Permit Committee.

The Work Permit Committee was introduced by Sir John Compton, then Prime Minister of Saint Lucia.  While the Committee fell under the ambit of the Ministry of Labour, Trade Unions, the Saint Lucia Hotels & Tourism Association, the St. Lucia Employers Federation, the Small Business Association, the Immigration Department and other stakeholders formed the hard core of that Committee.

The NWU strongly believes that with the current level of unemployment and the fact that Saint Lucians  are now qualifying themselves in every field of endeavour, every Work Permit request must be justified with very good and acceptable reason.

For positions where Work Permits are granted, Saint Lucians must be given the opportunity to understudy the individuals in those positions to allow Saint Lucians to gain the requisite competencies and skills.  The free for all must be checked and stopped. Every company must be held accountable for policing the work permits granted and must take action when violations are identified.

The Minister will receive his letter early in the coming week.
