Castries – The National Insurance Corporation is once again leading the charge to get Saint Lucians moving. The NIC is excited about staging the 2nd annual Sneaker Day, scheduled to take place on Wednesday June 278th, 2017. The goal of this activity is to create awareness among workers of the need to be more physically active in the workplace.
Research has shown that sitting for more than six hours per day increases the risk of heart disease, obesity, diabetes and hypertension which can ultimately lead to cancer. The widespread use of technology means that more workers are spending most of their day sitting at a desk. Sneaker Day therefore, encourages these workers to incorporate more physical activity into their day. Attire for Sneaker Day will be the usual corporate attire except workers are encouraged to wear their sneakers. Participants are encouraged to take selfies and share with the #758sneakerday2017 on various social media platforms.
“At the NIC we are actively promoting health and wellness among our employees. Apart from nutrition and exercise, our employee wellness programme encompasses workshops, blood screening to check cholesterol and diabetes which would help staff identify any alarming health issues in its early stages, says Mrs. Helen Hugobert-Richards, head of the Occupational Safety and Health Committee (OSH). “Sneaker Day is one of the ways in which the NIC is promoting the overall health of employees. We hope this activity will encourage more institutions to incorporate wellness programmes for the benefit of their employees,” Richards added.
