Tropical Storm Matthew’s effects on a number of the island’s farmers is starting to affect the retail sector.
Massy Stores is feeling the after effects of the storm, through shortages of supplies of some local fruits and vegetables.
The company has been apologising to customers for the unavailability of supply due to low production in a number of key products because of the weather.
Perishables manager at massy stores, Dunstan Demille says the company is facing a real challenge with getting adequate supplies of local produce, as many of the stores main suppliers suffered losses. The company says it is experiencing a reduction in the agricultural supplies normally received from farmers in key areas.
Demille says based on the company’s assessments through farm visits, every effort is being made to fill the gaps by working with the farmers especially in the south, who were less impacted to help supply stores in the north, where possible. Massy stores is also trying to source some of the products through importation, noting though that some of the products are unique to St. Lucia and some they are just unable to import due to restrictions.
