In a concerted effort to better understand and reduce tobacco use among young people, Saint Lucia is launching the fifth round of the Global Youth Tobacco Survey (GYTS), scheduled to run from April 30 to May 9, 2025.
The GYTS, an internationally standardized survey initiative supported by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the World Health Organization (WHO), targets school-age students between 13 and 15 years at secondary schools island-wide. The survey is designed to systematically track tobacco use trends among youth and provide critical insights that will shape national tobacco control efforts.
The benefits of the GYTS are extensive:
- It tracks youth tobacco use trends over time,
- It supports the development of evidence based policies,
- It identifies risk factors associated with tobacco use,
- It promotes global comparisons and fosters international collaboration,
- It empowers youth advocacy and awareness campaigns,
- It and helps reduce future tobacco-related diseases in Saint Lucia.
The data collected through this initiative will play an essential role in crafting targeted interventions and educational campaigns aimed at protecting Saint Lucia’s youth from the harmful effects of tobacco.
