Forestry Department celebrates World Forest Day

[Press Release] International Day of Forests is celebrated every year on March 21st, an observance day that was initiated by the United Nations and is used not only to celebrate the beauty and grandeur of the world’s forests but to also raise awareness about the importance of trees to the world and human civilization.

Forests not only are nice to look at but they are also essential to life on Earth. They also balance out the levels of oxygen and CO2 in the environment. Forest protects watersheds and filters and regulates water, contributing to high-quality freshwater supplies. Well managed forests and trees around cities provide habitats, food and protection for many plants and animals which maintains and increases biodiversity.

It is estimated that by 2050 six billion people will live in cities and that unprecedented urbanization should not mean concrete urban sprawls. Creating green spaces and planting trees in urban centres can significantly improve our quality of life and well-being.

To commemorate this special day the Forestry Department has embarked on a series of activities to educate the general populace with special emphasis on primary and infant school students. Presentations were and are being made at several schools, teaching students the importance of forest and what they can do as individuals to better our environment. Fruit trees and ornamentals were also planted at Comfort Bay in Laborie to provide much needed shade and fruits for the residents’ enjoyment.

Other activities include a joint panel discussion with the Water Resources Management Agency (WRMA) linking forests and water for human survival. This panel discussion will be aired on NTN on Thursday March 22, 2018. Also there is the launching of a short documentary film on our local incense-lasan- on March 21st, 2018.

Remember La Foway et terre se la vie. Let’s make our cities greener, healthier, happier places to live!
