Department of Education Promotes Gender Equality Among Early Childhood Educators

GIS:-Gender Equality was the Focus of A Recently-Held Early Childhood Development Workshop.

The Department of Education, Innovation, and Gender Relations is taking an aggressive approach to providing a strong foundation for gender equality in early childhood education.

Early childhood educators around the island attended a gender sensitization workshop on developing practices for gender equality in the early childhood setting.

Deputy Chief Education Officer, Rufina Charles, called on participants to be ambassadors for early childhood education, and to make changes in the early childhood setting.

“With this kind of thrust, we are hoping that you go back to your schools and sensitize your colleagues. Think of the instructional material you use. How gender specific are they? Are they neutral? Are you catering to one gender over the other? These are some of the things that will be discussed during the workshop.”

Education Officer for Early Childhood, Agnes Price, said the workshop allowed participants to share experiences and reflect on practices as educators in the early childhood sector.

“We encourage you to reflect on your practices, recognize your biases, and work in a manner to address the gender stereotypes,” she said. “We hope that you leave this workshop with a purpose to improve the quality of instruction at early childhood centers, and facilitate behavior change in your respective communities.”

UWI School of Education representative, Dr Sheran Burns, said she is pleased to be part of an initiative that will provide positive gender socialization for children.

“As guardians for young children it is imperative that we empower all children in the Eastern Caribbean to aspire to be, and to do, regardless of their sex. Boys and girls, therefore, must have access to equal opportunities to learn.”

The Gender Sensitization Workshop for Early Childhood Educators was made possible through the collaboration of the UWI School of Education and the Caribbean Development Bank.
