The Saint Lucia Bar Association President Ramón Raveneau has condemned the officers’ conduct in the controversial viral videos and challenged the force’s institutional culture.
The viral video which captured a heated exchange between police officers and a driver ; a well know attorney – has triggered an internal investigation by the Royal St. Lucia police force , as questions mount over officer conduct and use of force.
Ravenau stressing the need for sweeping reforms, including a shift in attitudes and mindset, called for body cameras for officers.
This week, Superintendent Troy E. Lamontagne, head of the traffic department, acknowledged this week that the officers’ actions “deviated from police procedures and the general principles of professional conduct and human rights.” Internal investigations are ongoing.
He stated “Whilst police officers have a duty to behave professionally and exercise diligence in the execution of our duties, the public also has a responsibility to comply with all lawful directions given by the police. In instances where one believes that police actions are inappropriate or unlawful, the law provides avenues to seek redress, whether through informal procedures, the Police Complaints Commission, or a judicial process.
