August 18th 2015 Making The Best Out Of The Seaweed Situation

Huge mats of sargassum seaweed are making life a bit difficult for residents, particularly in coastal communities such as Micoud and Praslin. However, scientists and local agriculture officials agree that it is time to make the best out of an uncomfortable situation.
Researchers from the University of the West Indies led a regional sargassum symposium on Wednesday, hoping to devise strategies to for dealing with the seaweed, which has swamped beaches across the Caribbean, affecting tourism, fisheries, agriculture and daily life. Saint Lucia’s agriculture and fisheries minister Moses Jn Baptiste says the overriding goal is to understand and manage the situation.
